Background of the Study
Nigerian English, a dynamic variety of English shaped by local languages and cultures, exhibits distinctive code-switching practices. Code-switching—the alternation between languages or dialects within a conversation—has been a prominent feature in Nigerian English, reflecting Nigeria’s rich multilingual environment (Oluwole, 2023). Over time, these practices have evolved due to factors such as urbanization, digital communication, and shifting socio-political landscapes (Afolabi, 2024). Early Nigerian English was heavily influenced by formal education and colonial standards, whereas contemporary usage often incorporates indigenous languages and colloquial expressions. This evolution highlights both linguistic creativity and the negotiation of identity among speakers (Nwachukwu, 2025). However, systematic studies tracking these diachronic changes remain scarce. By analyzing media, literature, and spoken discourse, this study seeks to document the evolution of code-switching in Nigerian English, examining its pragmatic, social, and cognitive dimensions. The research will provide insights into how language contact, identity, and global communication shape linguistic behavior in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem
Despite extensive informal observation of code-switching in Nigerian English, there is limited empirical research documenting its evolution over time. Existing studies tend to focus on contemporary practices without a diachronic perspective (Oluwole, 2023). This lack of longitudinal data impedes our understanding of how socio-political and technological changes have influenced code-switching. Furthermore, insufficient attention has been given to the cognitive and pragmatic aspects of these practices, leading to gaps in both theoretical and applied linguistics. Addressing these issues is crucial for developing a comprehensive model of code-switching that reflects the dynamic nature of Nigerian English.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document historical and contemporary code-switching practices in Nigerian English.
  2. To analyze the factors driving the evolution of these practices.
  3. To assess the pragmatic and cognitive implications of code-switching over time.

Research Questions

  1. How have code-switching practices in Nigerian English changed over time?
  2. What socio-cultural and technological factors drive these changes?
  3. What are the pragmatic and cognitive effects of evolving code-switching practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive diachronic analysis of code-switching in Nigerian English, contributing to our understanding of multilingual communication in Nigeria. The findings will inform linguistic theory, education, and media practices by elucidating how language mixing reflects and shapes social identity. By capturing the evolution of code-switching, the research supports the development of more culturally responsive communication strategies and language policies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to analyzing code-switching in Nigerian English over time and does not extend to other language varieties or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Code-Switching: The practice of alternating between two or more languages or dialects within a conversation.
  2. Nigerian English: A variety of English influenced by Nigerian linguistic and cultural elements.
  3. Diachronic Analysis: The study of language change over time.
